Full Metal Jacket review

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 12 December 2011 09:43 (A review of Full Metal Jacket)

An excellent war movie. Yet another reason to declare Kubrick a genius. The first half an hour of the film is utterly absorbing and entertaining. R Lee Ermey's character is predominantly the main reason for this, his sarcastic comments and the barbaric insults that come out of his mouth are nothing short of hilarious. Vincent D'Onofrio's portrayal of the victimised and very psychotic Private Pyle is unforgettable. Spectacular film, with spectacular direction, cinematography and dialogue. Definitely in top war films of all time.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy review

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 11 December 2011 08:33 (A review of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)

Thought-provoking, very classy and totally engaging. Alfredson follows up his brilliant achievement 'Let the Right one In' with another intriguing and successful film. Alfredson creates a masterly atmosphere which is brooding and sinister, you don't know which character to trust. With a cast jam-packed full of talent, Gary Oldman doesn't even have to say anything and we understand his quietly calculating, very subtle performance. Oscar time for Oldman, perhaps? He is in good company, with strong convincing turns from Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch and John Hurt. There is even a very amusing turn from Kathy Burke in a small role. The cinematography is astounding, convincingly taking you back to the 1970's, in seedy smoke filled, claustrophobic offices of MI6.
A cinematic achievement, greatly recommended.

The Thing review

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 11 December 2011 08:31 (A review of The Thing)

Atmospheric, engaging, utterly creepy, a stone cold horror classic. The Thing in my opinion is John Carpenter's finest hour. His direction is superb, every shot is meticulously crafted, Carpenter masterfully creates growing suspense and paranoia. Thematically it may be an alien horror but at its core, and what makes the film so fascinating is the human element, the characters decreasing trust in one another. Kurt Russell leads the cast with a very strong, low-key performance (his most iconic role in my humble opinion, though Snake Plissken is a close second) as RJ Macready the level-headed helicopter pilot who is the epitome of masculinity. There is not a weak link in the whole cast. A timeless and refreshing chiller, in my top five of all time.

Sunrise review

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 11 December 2011 08:30 (A review of Sunrise)

Quite simply beautiful. One of very few honest and poignant true love stories in cinema. It is very slow paced but highly worthwhile for its moments of romance, humour, tragedy and beauty. Murnau created a timeless silent film that stands up as perhaps one of the greatest films ever made.

About my collections

My DVD collection is very respectable, I own about 270 films now. I'm also trying to get my CD collection up to a high standard now because my second love is music.
